The dog is an "externally oriented" animal, according to Dr. Michael Fox, who has written a book on the psychology of cats. The dog, as he puts it, would be ruled by others and would act, feel and believe, as others expect them to. By contrast, the cat is an "internally oriented" animal. Compared with dogs, the cat is certainly egotistic and non-conforming. The cat is basically a loner, Dr. Fox says. Unlike humans and dogs, the cat does not feel the need to have itself accepted by a group and to fight for status and power in that group.
